What to See and Do on a Very Short Trip?

Question: Hi! Your blog has been so helpful to me in understanding a lot about Cape Cod. Me and my friend are planning to visit Cape Cod this Memorial Day.
It's basically a half day and a full day trip. We are going to be staying around Sandwich.
We want to see the important places. I want to see Martha's Vineyard for sure. What are the things and places that we should do for sure?
We are in mid-20s and kind of adventurous! Is there a good kayaking activity in Cape Cod?
Your suggestions can help us plan our trip better!
Dee's Reply: Hi Nivedita - Welcome to my Cape Days guide! I'm glad you're finding it helpful for learning about Cape Cod!!
Since you'll only be here for a very short visit, you won't have time to see and do much. But you can certainly visit Martha's Vineyard. You might be able to squeeze in a kayaking adventure, too.
Martha's Vineyard Day Trip
Is seeing Martha's Vineyard the #1 thing on your "must-do" list? If you take an early morning
ferry from Falmouth/Woods Hole to Martha's Vineyard, you'll have all day (or as much of the day as you'd like) to explore the island.
What to see and do while you're there? My
suggestions for things to see and do on Martha's Vineyard should help you with that.
Kayaking
Cape Cod is a fantastic place for kayaking! The Cape has lots of scenic bays, rivers, and inlets that are perfect for a few hour hours of paddling.
Here are two kayaking companies in the Sandwich area offer guided tours:
EcoTourz and
RideAway KayakFor anyone who's not familiar with our local waters, I always recommend taking a guided tour rather than heading off on your own. That way you'll be sure to see the best sights while you're on the water ... and you won't risk getting lost. ;-)
Memorial Day weekend is just a few days away, and it's always a busy time here. So if you do hope to take a guided kayak tour, you'll want to contact the company as soon as possible to make your reservations!
More Fun in Sandwich MA
If you still have time to spare, here are a few more suggestions for things to do in Sandwich:
Beach Time
A visit to the Cape isn't complete without some time at the beach!
The towns of
Sandwich and
Barnstable share a gorgeous, 7-mile-long stretch of beachfront on Cape Cod Bay known as
Sandy Neck.
Sandy Neck is a great place to relax, soak up some rays, and do a little beachcombing.
Be on the lookout for small heart-shaped beach stones that wash up on the shoreline. They're fun to find and make a nice little momento of your visit to the Cape.
Sandy Neck is also one of the very few beaches on Cape Cod where you can have a beach campfire. An evening on the beach, toasting marshmallows and watching the stars come out, is always a nice way to end the day! (
Rules for beach campfires)
Bike Ride Along the Canal
Do you and your friend enjoy bicycling? The access roads alongside the Cape Cod Canal are great for biking, in-line skating, jogging and walking.
There are lots of places to stop for a rest, to take photos, spot wildlife, and watch the boats transiting the Canal.
Bring your bikes or
rent bicycles when you get here. In addition to the Canal access roads, there are many miles of fantastic
bike trails all over Cape Cod.
Whatever you decide to see and do while you're here, I'm sure you'll have fun on your day-and-a-half visit. Come back again soon when you can stay longer!
Best Regards,
Dee
