Cape Cod Herring Runs

Fish ... running? Yes, indeed! And they climb ladders, too!!

We see these amazing feats every spring when thousands of herring migrate from the wide-open ocean to our local rivers, streams, lakes and ponds to spawn.

Sandwich Bazaar

When: Wednesdays in April, 2025, from 6 a.m. to noon, and Sundays from 7 a.m. to noon

Where: 34 Quaker Meetinghouse Road, Sandwich

It's time again for the oldest and largest flea market on Cape Cod!

The Sandwich Bazaar takes place Wednesdays and Sundays from April to October and hosts vendors with everything from local produce to hand-crafted jewelry to organic dog treats.

Here's just a sampling of what might be offered at the National Seashore in April 2025 ...

And of course, there's the ever-popular "Junior Ranger" program where the kids are invited to complete Junior Ranger booklet activities and participate in an award ceremony.

Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra - "Beethoven: The Revolutionary"

When: April 5 & 6, 2025, performances Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.

Where: Barnstable Performing Arts Center, 744 Main Street, Hyannis, MA

Ticket Prices: From $32+ for adults, students from $16+

A “compositional rebel” and great romantic, Beethoven rejected standard classical practices to write with relentless emotion, inspiring many of history’s most famous composers to follow suit.

This all-Beethoven program is highlighted by the great “Leonore” Overture, and a culminating performance of his epic Symphony No. 5.

Ticket holders are invited to get to know the guest conductor, who is a candidate to be Cape Symphony's next Music Director, at a Q&A session led by Assistant Conductor Joe Marchio. These sessions begin one hour prior to each Masterpiece Series concert.

The Adventure Park - Opening Weekend

When: April 11, 2025

Where: The Adventure Park at Heritage Museums & Gardens,  67 Grove Street, Sandwich, MA

"Ponies & Peeps" at Mills River Rescue

When: April 12, 2025, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Rain date: April 13)

Where: Mills River Rescue & Sanctuary, 240 River Road, Marstons Mills MA

Tickets: $20 per person (reservations required!)

Come join Patti and her wonderful team of volunteers at Mills River Rescue and Sanctuary's "Ponies & Peeps" event!

This is your family's chance to visit with the adorable ponies, bunnies, ducks and other animals that are so fortunate to have found a home at Mills River Rescue.

There'll be visits with the Easter Bunny, games and prizes, crafts, as well as yummy lunch and desserts - all included in the admission price.

All proceeds from this event go toward the care and feeding of the animals. A great cause, to be sure!

CMNH School Vacation Week Special Programs

When: April 15 - 21, 2024 during Museum hours

Where: Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, 869 Main Street, Brewster MA

Do you have an animal lover in the family? Or maybe a budding scientist? Cape Cod Museum of Natural History has special April school vacation week events just for them!

This year's events include guided family field walks; Mixology: Chemistry for Kids; performances by Trevor the Juggler; screening of the film "Octopus: Making Contact"; and an awe-inspiring, inflatable gray whale to walk through and explore from the inside out!

Outermost Contra Dance

When: April 18, 2025; doors open at 6:15 p.m.; Contra Basics workshop at 6:30; dancing starts at 7:00

Where: Wellfleet Preservation Hall, 335 Main Street, Wellfleet, MA

Cost: $15 regular admission; $10 for ages 30 or younger; $5 for students (with ID)

Put on your dancin' shoes for this fun event at Preservation Hall!

Contra dancing is the older cousin to the square dance. No fancy footwork needed – if you can walk, you can dance!  (All the dances are taught and called. If you're new to contra dance, be sure to get in on the early dances for the basic moves.)

Everyone is welcome at this family friendly event, from total beginners to expert dancers. Bring a partner, or come solo. There are plenty of friendly people in this welcoming dance community!

Whale Watch Cruises - Opening Day

When: April 19, 2025, multiple departure times

Where: From Provincetown Harbor

Tickets:  $75 adults; $65 seniors; $50 kids (ages 5 - 12)

Whale watching officially gets underway this week as Dolphin Fleet opens their 2025 season. (Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises' opening day isn't until mid-May.)

Although it'll still be a little chilly on the water in April, the boats' cabins are climate controlled. So you'll be plenty comfy.

And whales don't mind the cold water temps. They'll be out there "putting on the feed bag" and showing off for you!

Meet the Easter Bunny & Egg Hunt

When: April 19, 2025, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: Central Square at Mashpee Commons, 22 Steeple Street, Mashpee MA

Bring the kids to meet the Bunny and search for Easter eggs at the shops of Mashpee Commons

This popular annual event include photos with the Easter Bunny, face painting, the egg hunt and more!

Build a Fairy House!

When: April 22, 2025, 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m. (Rain date: April 24)

Where: Fuller Farm, 995 Rt. 149, Marstons Mills, MA

Admission: $25, includes building materials and refreshments (pre-registration required)

Does a special child in your life love fairy tales and nature? This event is for them!

Children aged 7-11 are invited to Fuller Farm to spend the morning creating their own magical Fairy House.

Kids will be guided into the forest to collect materials, then head back to the barn to construct their Fairy Houses. (You can bring some supplies if you like, but remember when collecting to take only items that have fallen to the ground, not ones that are currently attached to plants or trees!)

Refreshments will be provided. Come dressed for a fun time in the great outdoors!

*Note: This is one of many wonderful programs offered by Barnstable Land Trust during the month of April in celebration of Earth Month 2025.

Heritage Museums & Gardens - Opening Day

When: April 2025 opening day - TBA

Where: Heritage Museums & Gardens, 67 Grove St., Sandwich, MA

Opening day at Heritage is always a welcome event - a sure sign that winter is finally in our rear-view mirror.

Nothing says "Welcome to Spring!" like a few hours spent wandering through Heritage's many acres of gardens, alive in colorful, early-season blooms.

Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to visit the gallery buildings filled with fabulous American Art, classic vintage autos, and special exhibitions. The kids will have a blast exploring Hidden Hollow, too!
