Plenty of playgrounds on Cape Cod have some accessibility features like ramps and rubber surfaces.
But when we're talking about truly inclusive playgrounds—the ones designed so kids of all abilities can happily play together for hours on end—that narrows the field.
The playgrounds on this page go well beyond the basics.
They’re built for a wide range of physical, sensory, and developmental needs—with connected ramps, ground-level play features, and spaces that support both active and quiet moments.
They're also great for mixed-ability families, with plenty for siblings to explore and enjoy together.
Here’s a closer look at each one, listed by town:
2377 Meetinghouse Way (Rt. 149)
West Barnstable MA
If my memory serves, this was the first inclusive playground on Cape Cod. And it still lives up to all the praise heaped on it when it first opened.
Luke’s Love is fully fenced, has rubber surfacing, and packs in a solid range of inclusive features: ramps, adaptive swings, tactile features, quiet areas, and equipment that works for kids of different ages and abilities.
There’s a 3-season porta-potty on-site—not exactly glamorous, but useful in a pinch.
Parking is right next to the playground, and the entrance is easy to spot.
Just be forewarned: this playground gets hot when the sun beats down in the "dog days" of summer. I've heard that shade canopies are in the works, but I’m not sure when they’ll be installed. (I’ll update this when I know more.)
27 Summer Street
Buzzards Bay, MA
This one’s technically on the "mainland" (north) side of the Cape Cod Canal. But if you're on the "Cape side" of the Canal, it’s worth the quick hop over the bridge to get here.
This playground has rubber surfacing, all the necessary ramps, adaptive swings, musical panels, and a wheelchair-friendly glider ... plus one of my personal favorites: a zip line.
I suspect the zip line wasn’t built for adult-size gravity, so I've resisted the urge to give it a whirl. But watching the kids zipping down the line, it looks seriously fun!
There’s also some adult fitness equipment here if you’re feeling motivated—or just want to lean on something while your kids get their fun on.
(*Note: No restrooms here, so plan accordingly.)
Parking can be a little confusing the first time.
About a hundred yards after you turn off Main Street (look for the Canal Crossways sign), there’s a small-ish lot on your right and a path to the playground.
Sandy Pond Recreation Area
482 Buck Island Road
West Yarmouth MA
This one’s the "new kid" on the Cape—opened in 2023 and designed from the ground up with inclusivity in mind.
The playground is fully fenced, with rubber surfaces, wide ramps, climbing structures, interactive panels, and all sorts of fun stuff to suit a wide range of needs and abilities.
The layout’s spacious and easy to navigate, but shade is minimal. If you’re coming on a sunny summer day, bring hats and sunscreen—bathing suits and water shoes, too.
The splash deck right by the playground is one of the top splash pads on Cape Cod, and it’s hard to resist once the water’s on!
This recreation area has picnic tables, (seasonal) restrooms, and plenty of parking.
Finding a playground that works for your whole crew—whatever their abilities—shouldn’t feel like a scavenger hunt.
These inclusive spots get it right; and hopefully, we’ll see more like them in the years to come!
