Teen Activities - Labor Day Weekend

Question: We will be visiting Cape Cod for the Labor Day weekend for a family party, but need something to do on Saturday with our 3 kids aged 16, 14, and 12.

We are staying in the Bourne area. Should we head out to Boston or stay on Cape? These kids are from NY and have never seen Cape Cod. What is best thing to do with them?

Dee's Reply: Hi Kristen - Travel all the way to Boston for the day? Nah! You'll have much more fun chillin' out here on the Cape - without the time, effort, and expense involved in a day trip to the big city. ;-)

How to spend a day in Bourne? The first thing that comes to mind is beach time. Assuming the weather cooperates, a day at the beach can't go amiss!

I'd recommend Scusset Beach, just over the bridge on the "mainland" side of the Cape. Scusset is a large, pretty Cape Cod Bay beach, and it has all the amenities - a snack bar, lifeguards, restrooms, rinse-the-sand-off facilities, a fishing pier, and a picnic area.

If you want to do a part-beach/part-sightseeing day, then take your bikes when you go to Scusset Beach. The beach is at the eastern entrance to the Cape Cod Canal.

On both sides of the Canal, there are flat, paved, 7-mile-long service roads that're great for walking, in-line skating, and biking. Scenic stops and picnic areas are scattered along the way, and it's always fun to see the tug boats, yachts and Coast Guard vessels transiting the Canal.

If your family is into cycling, the Canal service roads are a great spot to do it!

Another idea would be to spend the day in Falmouth. Falmouth is a right next door to Bourne, to the south. It's a great all-around town that'd be perfect for a family day trip.

Falmouth has a great selection of beaches, as well as tons of other stuff to see and do - historic sites, hiking and biking paths, watersports (kayaking, fishing, sailing charters, etc.), guided walking and trolley tours, shopping, and lots of dining options.
