Race Point Beach Overnight Tent Camping

by Haki
(Quincy, MA)

Question: Is true that I can't set up a tent at Race Point beach and camp overnight? Do you have suggestion of a place near Race Point Beach where I can set up my tent and walk to the beach? Thank you!

Dee's Reply: Hello, Haki! Yes, it's true. Tent camping is prohibited at Race Point Beach. Actually, overnight beach tenting isn't allowed on any Cape Cod beaches.

For walk-to-the-beach tent camping, the nearest spot to Race Point that I can think of is North of Highland Camping Area in North Truro. It's about a half-mile walk down a sandy path from the campgrounds to Head of the Meadow Beach.

(FYI: Race Point is a beautiful beach, but I prefer the more secluded feeling of Head of the Meadow.)

If you're open to staying in a different part of the Cape, there are a few other places where you can camp very close to the beach (within about 1/4 mile or less):

Scusset Beach State Reservation
Sagamore Beach, MA

The state park at Scusset Beach has a few tent-camping sites that're just a short walk to the beach.

The only down-side to Scusset is that it's on the other side of the Canal, before you cross over the bridge onto the Cape.

Sandy Neck
Sandwich, MA

The tent camping area at Sandy Neck is set back a good distance from the beach, and it's verrrrrry primitive. You have to lug your stuff in and out on foot - no vehicles are allowed in the tenting area.

Washburn Island
East Falmouth, MA

Just as its name says, Washburn Island really is an island. The only way to get there is by boat or kayak. It's a fun and unique spot for tenting at the beach - if you can overcome the transportation issue!
