Driving from Logan Airport to Cape Cod and Return on Memorial Day Weekend

Question: Hey there! Tons of good info about predictable jams on holiday weekends, but my question is two parts:

(1) how long do you think it would take to drive from Logan airport to Dennis on Saturday during the day, and

(2) maybe I missed it but I didn't see anything about return time to Boston for Monday's of holiday weekends?

What's the daytime traffic like northbound/peak travel times? I mean are we looking at a six hour adventure in both directions?

Are you looking at a 6-hour adventure in both directions? No. Are you looking at a 3-hour adventure? Probably. And maybe more, especially on your return trip to Boston on Monday.

With the caveat that this is all subject to change due to fender-benders (other people's ;-), weather conditions, idiot drivers, etc., here's the drill ...

Drive Time to Cape Cod on Saturday

Getting out of Boston on Saturday morning is usually pretty easy, traffic-wise. So I expect you'll have relatively smooth sailing until you near the Sagamore Bridge.

Depending on how early/late in the day you reach the bridge, you'll either have a straight shot over, or you'll be sitting there twiddling your thumbs for a while.

If you get to the bridge before 9 a.m., you should be fine. Your total drive time from Logan Airport to Dennis will likely be around 2 hours.

Any later, you're probably looking at 2 1/2 to 3 hours of in-the-car time.

Returning to Logan Airport on Monday

This is where predicting gets really dicey.

There's no way to know how early the mad rush to leave the Cape will begin. If you beat it, you're golden. If you're caught in the middle of it, ugh!

My best guess is that if you leave Dennis by 8:30 - 9:00 a.m. on Monday, you'll miss the bulk of the traffic going off-Cape. (Notice that once again I said "guess"?!)

All in all, the best advice I can give you is: Earlier is better.

P.S. There is another way. If you take the bus or the train from Boston to the Cape and back, you can relax and let someone else worry about the traffic. Rent a car in Hyannis when you get here, and you'll be all set!
