Question: We are looking at a nice cottage on Taylors Pond in South Chatham. The owner says it's a 0.4 mile walk to Cockle Cove Beach. I didn't find that beach in your guide. What can you tell me about it? Thanks a lot for your help!

Now, on to your question ...

Renting a cottage that's within walking distance of Cockle Cove Beach sounds like a great idea to me!

Cockle Cove is a smaller beach that faces out onto Nantucket Sound. I think of it more as a neighborhood beach than a "destination beach", mostly because the services and amenities are limited. In the summer months, the beach is lifeguarded and there's a porta-potty available. And that's about it.

Since your cottage will be just a short walk away from the beach, you can do as the other neighborhood folks do - take a quick stroll back to the house for bathroom breaks and lunch. No fuss, no muss!

You haven't mentioned whether you'll be bringing kids with you to Cape Cod. Just in case you will be (and for any other parents who might read this post), let me give you a few kid-related insights:

Cockle Cove is a nice, safe beach for very young children. The wave action is little to none, and the water is almost "bathtub warm" in the summer months. No blue lips, chattering teeth, and goose-bumps to contend with. ;-)

Give the tykes a plastic bucket and shovel and a small, fine-mesh net. That's all they'll need for toddler nirvana ... hours of sandcastle building, shell collecting, and chasing minnows.

For older kids, it could go either way. If they're content with hanging out and soaking up the sun, they'll love being just a short walk or bike ride away from Cockle Cove. On the other hand, if they're into beach sports like frisbee, beach bocce, paddleboarding, etc., they'll likely prefer a larger, more active beach like Ridgevale, just a few miles up the street.

For us adults, Cockle Cove is a wonderful little getaway beach. It's a perfect place to spend some quiet time with a good book, an early-morning cup of coffee, or an evening "adult beverage". The marsh and little creek behind the beach provide some good wildlife viewing and photo opps, too.
