My "Everyday" Crabbing Clothes
Question: What kind of footwear should we wear for catching crabs if we plan to be on the water?
Thanks... your information is amazing!
Dee's Reply: Hi Maria - Thank you so much for your kind words, and for asking this question!
I can't believe I forgot to include a What to Wear section in my crabbing information. Major miss on my part!
Recommended Clothing for Crabbing
Here's what I always take with me when we're going crabbing:
Water Shoes
The trick to "walk and stalk" crabbing is a stealthy approach. That means walking slowly and quietly through some rocky and mucky areas. Not an easy - or comfortable - thing to do in bare feet!
My go-to footwear is a good pair of
water shoes. The rubber soles will protect your feet from pointy rocks and sharp shells. And the knobby rubber "grippers" on the bottom will help your footing on slime-covered stones.
Hint: Don't. I repeat, do not! go crabbing in flip-flops. Been there, done that. Once. Never again. Wet rocks + slippery soles = cut-up toes. Ouch!
Water shoes are definitely the way to go for safe, comfortable crabbing footwear. You'll be happy to have them!!
Polarized Sunglasses
This is my other "must have" accessory for crab catching.
With the sun's glare off the water, it's nearly impossible to see what's on the bottom unless you're wearing
polarized sunglasses.
My hubby and I spend hundreds of hours a year on the water
fishing. So we've invested in
top-of-the-line sunglasses to protect our eyes. (I wear mine year round, on land and on the water. They're wonderful for cutting snow glare, too!)
Now, I'm not suggesting that you spend a bundle of bucks on fancy eyewear. For a few hours of crab catching, all you really need is a decent pair of
polarized sunglasses, preferably with UV-protective lenses to protect your eyes from the sun's harmful reflecting rays.
Hat & Cover-Up
Last but not least, be sure to bring a hat and cover-up shirt with you. Even on a cloudy day, the sun's rays are much stronger than you might imagine.
Columbia shirts are my faves. They're super-light weight, so you'll stay nice and cool on a hot day. And the built-in UV protection will keep you from turning as red as a lobster from sunburn. ;-)
Plus, if you do happen to go "splash" (yes, it does happen on occasion), these shirts dry out in no time at all.
Again, thanks for asking this question. Have fun on your crab-catching adventure!
Best Regards,
Dee
